Self Portrait
When we first started this piece, I had recently gotten out of an unhealthy relationship that lasted almost 3 years and left me with things to heal from. I wanted to use the heart to represent myself because the heart is often used to symbolize emotions. I chose to make it look more realistic with size and color to tie the piece to myself and human emotion. The cracks represent the lies throughout the relationship because every lie I had been told felt like my heart had actually been breaking. At the time everything was all really painful but with the support around me, I'm able to move past it. To represent the support, I used the gold to fill in the cracks to get a similar look to Kintsugi, which is the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramic. Kintsugi is supposed to represent that we can heal from our wounds, and become stronger and that we don't need to be perfect to be beautiful.
