Final Year Thesis - A Place to Breathe - outdoor environment mixed media, 2003 Research and Development Centre for Urban Symptoms Presently, most of society trudges through life while enjoying a balanced diet of work, sleep and televisions. Never questioning the validity of the social norm, individuals are forced to endure various forms fo axiety, phobia and stress. Forced into a reality where virtue is polished, packaged and mass produced, the individual becomes a floating number within a system where life is garnished and undressed simultaneously. I propose to develop a research centre, set within the chaotic dichotomy of the urban landscape. A mixed use centre consisting of commercial, research and public space. The centre will operate on a twenty-four hour platform and will be set within an mixed industrial and natural landscape. The Research and Development Centre for Urban Symptoms will offer 'breathing space' for the urban dweller and serve as a living research laboratory.
Final Year Thesis - A Place to Breathe - Decompressing the urban dweller Mixed Media, 2003 Research and Development Centre for Urban Symptoms It is far too common to witness individuals trudging through life on a well balanced diet of work, sleep and television. It seems that anxiety, phobia and stress have become imbedded in the daily urban lifestyle. The boundary between work and rest has been seamlessly blurred. Society has become accustomed to a reality where virtue is polished, packaged and mass produced leaving the human spirit lost within a floating matrix of time and numbers. I propose to a research centre set within the chaotic dichotomy of the urban landscape. It will serve a mixed use program consisting of commercial, research and public space. The centre will operate on a twenty-four hour platform studying the effects of the urban condition. The Research and Development Centre for Urban Symptoms will strive to offer ‘breathing space' to the urban dweller.
