Book: NYC Blackout - This handmade book is based on stories I collected about the 2003 New York blackout. Each story is illustrated with a pattern of cut-out squares on the page. These patterns are actually the musical score for a player piano, created by mapping each letter to a note in the piano-roll composing language. The blank squares represent the idea that something was missing during the blackout; the fact that these blank squares can create music mirrors the unusual stories that emerged.
Book: Tunnels - This is a spread for an illustrated book of stories about being trapped in train tunnels. The scope of this project later expanded to include data abstraction that involved musical composition.
Book: Timeline - This is a book-within-a-book based on journal entries over a 12-hour period. The idea for this piece was to document a period of wasted time and turn it into an enjoyable experience for the viewer, thereby reclaiming it. The book features a timeline cut into the book by hand, in which 1/32nd of an inch is the equivalent of 1 minute. The holes eating away at the page allude to the idea that this is wasted time being documented.
