A collection of works entailing traditional media, digital, and 3D printing design Brent Hartwell
Constructed from paper and oil paint mediums, this piece was made using a jelly print: a flexible jelly surface that was painted and imprinted with bubble wrap and a ribbon, then sealed through a printing press onto a sheet; with gold and red paint for details added afterwards. It illustrates how sporadic life can be and through a small change in its orderly course, a burst of excitement can emerge.
BlueBat Mini Projector was a self guided assignment inspired by my friend's complaints about a projector meant for the modern age. I then endeavored to create one and through multiple stages of planning and testing, I fully rendered a 3D potential product for the market. (View Full Size)

Custom Water Pump made with Inventor during my fourth year of study using the the Computer Aided Design program of Inventor I proceeded to test myself on a high level design that would involve research on measurements and direct observation of the object. This project would then go towards the first part of my Midterm assignment.
First Light Lithograph print after computer design made into a collage ink print highlighted with mark-making techniques, this piece is made from multiple sheets of paper laced together and cropped to a size of 8"x10". "First Light" originated as a self carved lithograph print of an owl perched on a lonesome branch in the face of a mountain peak, amid a swirling sky. It was then pressed onto the multiple sheets. The piece was submitted as a part of a local art installation at my school, encouraging animal rights.

Made on 20''x15'' paper, I utilized oil pastel to create an observational piece of my grandfather's pocket watch resting precariously on a wooden table with its chain twisting across towards the quarter positioned at the perimeter of the piece. The watch hand and swerving chain add movement throughout the piece and are used to convey the road of oppression felt by certain groups throughout our race's history but at the end of the long path that time oversees, leads only to freedom and liberty as inscribed on the coin.
Tasked with creating a children's toy design and developing it into a 3D rendering in my fourth year of study in Computer Aided Design, I decided to construct a toy miniature train whose wheels would roll and move the brace frame when pushed forwards.
The second portion of the PRATT Summer PreCollege Program, we were tasked with making a structure as tall as us, possibly to be seen in a public space so visually appealing, but also represent a part of ourselves. Attached are my plannning stages and final 3D construction of the piece. (View Full Size)

"Solace" is an observational piece crafted on 15"x8" canvass out of charcoal. After looking at a skull that sat on my teacher's desk for three years, watching me everyday. I decided to turn the tables, thus began this self driven observational drawing.
In my fourth year of study using the Computer Aided Design Inventor program our class was tasked with developing a custom paperweight whose drawing would appear in our town's wall of design. I developed this design and achieved 1st place placement on the wall.
This project was driven by a personal event in my life in which my grandfather had started to develop arthritis in his hand after utilizing a cane to benefit his aging legs. After conducting research I discovered he was not the only one suffering from the effects of canes on the hand. So I then commenced a design to counteract these poorly constructed canes with one of my own which I hope to develop into a product shortly. (View Full Size)

The pressure and demands that society places on an individual can make it feel like you're carrying the weight of the world on your back. In this piece done on 9"x12" paper, with watercolor paint, color pencil, graphite, and mark-making techniques, I hope to represent the very essence of being brought down by the stress of life. The ink portions of this piece were drawn with a self constructed inkwell pen, whose composition entailed an adjustable finger hold allowing for different ways of grasping the pen, and a dial to increase the amount of ink secreted by it, enabling the pen to produce the thick and thin black lines shown.
Made during NJIT'S 2014 Summer PreCollege Program, our final assignment was to develop a structure to be placed in the Newark Art Museum's Sculpture Garden as a monument to a futuristic invention we had made that helped the world. Attached are the detailed pages and planning of both the structure and invention designed while in the program. (View Full Size)
