There are some conditions that are too extreme even for the most extreme backcountry ski race in North America. In its 17-year history, the Grand Traverse race that takes top skiers on a 40-mile trip from Crested Butte to Aspen — in the dead of night, in blinding blizzards, in finger-freezing cold and in tip-over-strength winds, through avalanche chutes, across frozen streams and down icy drop-offs. Too much snow and too high a danger of avalanches on a remote pass between the towns. You want to looks your best when you cross the finish line.
