The original docking station had a separate clear plastic cover that protected the speakers when the docking station was not in use. I improved the design by designing simple attachments that keep the two pieces together. The curved surfaces allow the cover to rotate open when the docking station is in use.

MP3 Docking Station Case Study

As part of the requirements for Design and Communication in Graphics (final year, high school class) we were given a brief which asked us to:
-carry out an investigation into the features and physical form of existing MP3 docking stations
-compare two docking stations in detail
-make a complete 3D model of a docking station
- produce rendered sketches of the docking station
and
-propose a modification to improve an existing docking station

I completely disassembled an existing docking station to create an accurate model in Solidworks. By copying all the features attentively, I learned a lot of important important modelling techniques.

This was a project in high school that I really enjoyed doing and cemented my interest in product design and engineering.
