Sculpture: Spike - I was walking the railroad tracks with a friend and the amount of scrap steel laying around put an idea in my head. I was mainly interested in all the old spikes they pull and replace with new due to corrosion.
Sculpture: Spike - Originally I put it together the sit something like an opening flower. The idea was for it to throw interesting shadows, which it seemed to be doing.
After looking at it for a bit I felt it was too static and not as interesting as it could be. I played around with different ways for it to sit and feel it does best like this. Sitting like this it looks as if its on the verge of tipping over although is very stable. As an added bonus, when you touch the arms of spikes they have a spring quality and move around.
Sculpture: Spike - As you can see the exterior was left in its raw rusty finish and the interior has been cleaned down to bare steel. I feel the contrast between the two help set off the different areas.
Sculpture: Spike - The spike arms center on a quarter inch plate and then I gave them a quick blend to smooth things out.
