Alberta Rose - The Alberta Rose is a small chaise-lounge which can also be used as a two seat bench when turned sideways. It combines modern furniture making techniques along with some more traditional and decorative elements. The main body of the piece is made of bent-plywood which is of course a technique used in the twentieth century; however the arched back and the dark stain are reminiscent of chaise-lounges from the Regency Period in England. I added another decorative element with the Alberta Wild Rose in silhouette silk-screened at the foot of the cushion. This flourish is inspired by both Victorian and French decorative furniture as well as printed t-shirts by clothing companies such as Smoking Lily.
Nanotable - For this project we were to design something for a kitchen 50 years in the future. We were not expected to back up our designs scientifically, and were not limited by current technology. I created a table that used programmable matter to form dishes from a reservoir of material in the table. The user could select from different patterns on the screen each time they ate at the table.
Eraflure Light - In this project, we were to use objects that were previously manufactured to create a light. We were to then make variations on the light using the same materials, but different shapes outside of their original manufacture. I chose acrylic nails and a mesh stationary cup from IKEA to house the light and create these small fixtures that might be used in a series for ambient light in a bar or home.
The Sparrow - The Sparrow is a small wingback chair placed high atop a barstool base. Like a lot of contemporary furniture, it appropriates traditional design icons and makes them new again by placing them into a different context. It is very comfortable and would be appropriate at a coffee bar or in a residential kitchen.
Healthy Snacks Point of Purchase Display - The objective here was to design a point of purchase display for “Healthy Snacks”. This referred to foods which were healthy or organic, but also processed like those you might find in a health food store snack section. I attempted to create a display that reflected this by using baskets like the ones that go directly from a farm to the tables at a farmer’s market, but then fabricated them out of a shiny PVC plastic to indicate the processed quality of the snacks.
