Proposed concept for AED unit enclosure, an acrylic defibrillator enclosure, within which the device is contained. The enclosure is red frosted translucent acrylic formed in a heart shape or symbol. The form is split in half along the vertical axis and hinged at the top to allow access to the defibrillator. The enclosure mounts from the back to a wall or vertical surface. Within the mounting boss is a cavity for battery powered red led light(s) which blink in the same rhythm a healthy human heart beats. The light is diffused through the frosted acrylic behind the defibrillator to produce a soft, blinking glow. The object draws the attention of individuals passing by and attempts to surmount potential language differences/barriers by using a universally familiar shape as the form of the enclosure surrounding the actual device.

UPenn Defibrillator Design Challenge

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a major public health issue within the United States. AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) are devices which can deliver life saving shocks to the heart. Use of an AED can mean the difference between life and death for a person experiencing SCA. AEDs are safe, portable, and the instructions are depicted so that the device can utilized by almost anyone.
The challenge seeks to address the fact that AEDs are not in the forefront of the public psyche. Surprisingly, people are not aware these devices can be accessed for emergencies in public facilities, areas, and locations. The design: craft a unique object, housing or signage which surrounds, calls out, and/or brings attention to the AED location so as to make it more noticeable and memorable, and encourage use during a cardiac emergency event.
