South End Culinary School
The built cityscape is unique in that it shows the growth of nature prevailing in an asphalt and brick world. I wanted to allow this natural phenomenon to influence the abstract design of the building by incorporating nature and the permeability of the trees into the building facade. To me going to school is a process, or progression, in which the student is continually learning and, with that, progressing into who they hope to be at the end of their education. Therefore I organized the buildings program so students are working their way up through the building, starting at the basement floor in the beginner kitchens and working their way towards the student run restaurant on the top floor of the building. An open atrium creates a connection of views from floor to floor allowing students to see where they have come from and where they will progress to.
